Waratahs winger Lachie Turner claimed the only try of the match to help his side to a 19-12 victory over the ACT Brumbies.
The Waratahs climbed into fifth place with the win and, with three rounds left, are now just a point outside a place in the semi-finals.
Despite picking up a bonus point, the Brumbies hopes of a top four spot are fading fast after the result saw them drop seven points behind the leading quartet.
Waratahs fly-half Daniel Halangahu gave his side a 9-0 lead with penalties in the third, 18th and 25th minutes.
Level pegging
But opposite number Mat Giteau struck back with three of his own in the last 15 minutes of the first half, including an injury-time equaliser, to take his side into the break with the scores level.
Halangahu booted the hosts back in front seven minutes after the restart before Turner caught a pinpoint Berrick Barnes cross-kick on his finger tips and skipped 20 metres up the touchline to score.
Halangahu converted to give the Waratahs a 19-9 lead but 10 minutes later Giteau struck his fourth of the match to pull the visitors to within a converted try of their hosts.
The Brumbies kept up the pressure as the minutes counted down but, three minutes into injury time, a penalty to the Waratahs ended their chances.
