The Reds had looked to be cruising to a comfortable win as they opened up a 31-16 lead in the second half.
The Highlanders rallied, though, and two late tries gave them a chance of snatching their first win of the season.
However the Reds managed to keep their cool and close out the match.
Dominated
It was a deserved win for the Queenslanders, who dominated for long periods - with Will Genia and Quade Cooper pulling the strings brilliantly.
James Hanson, Liam Gill, Jake Schatz and Genia all crossed for tries, while Cooper added 14 points from the boot. However the enigmatic No 10 also missed a couple of shots at goal that would have given his side some breathing space.
The Highlanders had led 13-7 during the first period but they struggled for long periods to breach the Reds defence until it was too late.
Elliot Dixon dived over in the first half, while Hosea Gear and Ma'a Nonu crossed late on to give the hosts hope of a dramatic comeback.
Colin Slade slotted over 11 points, while Lima Sopoaga added two conversions and a penalty.
