Byfield seals last-gasp Walsall victory
Ten-man Walsall pulled off an amazing 1-0 win over Colchester thanks to a goal from substitute Darren Byfield in the third minute of stoppage time.
It was the second time in eight days that Colchester had lost to a team reduced to 10 men, having been beaten by Carlisle in a similar situation last week.
The Saddlers felt aggrieved when referee Geoff Eltringham sent off captain Mark Hughes who appeared to win the ball with a one-footed tackle near the halfway line.
But Walsall had the last laugh when Troy Deeney found the lurking Byfield near the halfway line and he broke through to beat Colchester keeper Ben Williams with a low shot which just trickled over the line.
In a fairly even first half Colchester should have taken the lead but goalkeeper Rene Gilmartin did well to plunge at the feet of Kevin Lisbie who was clean through.
Colchester dominated the second half but Walsall defended bravely, Gilmartin made two or three good saves and they enjoyed an escape on 90 minutes when Anthony Wordsworth hit a post.
