Lee Butcher was Leyton Orient's hero as they beat Southend 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in their Carling Cup clash.
Butcher, who pulled off a string of fine saves to deny Southend throughout the 120 minutes, then saved two spot kicks to deny Liam Dickinson and JP Kalala at Roots Hall. It was left for veteran striker Jamie Cureton to secure a place in the second round for Russell Slade's side. Teenage midfielder Michael Richardson, on loan from Premier League side Newcastle, had put Orient ahead in the 23rd minute with a 12-yard header from Alex Revell's cross. But Southend levelled nine minutes later when Mark Phillips got his head on the end of a Ryan Hall free-kick. Orient went down to 10 men on the hour when Jonathan Tehoue was dismissed for violent conduct after a headbutt on Luke Prosser. Butcher then stole the show with a number of superb saves as Orient scraped through.
