Rotherham win 5-3 on penalties

Millers sample shoot-out success

Rotherham eliminated Sheffield Wednesday following a penalty shoot-out victory in the Carling Cup.

Owls' wings clipped at Hillsborough

Rotherham eliminated Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday following a dramatic 5-3 penalty shoot-out victory in the first round of the Carling Cup. Reuben Reid coolly fired the winning spot-kick as Rotherham triumphed over Brian Laws men at Hillsborough. Etienne Esajas had twice given Wednesday the lead, but Rotherham hit back immediately on both occasions through Alex Rhodes and then Reid. Wednesday initially picked up where they left off in their resounding opening-day win over Burnley on Saturday. Rotherham defender Ian Sharps' lunging tackle denied Deon Burton, Leon Clarke had a header disallowed for pushing and Steve Watson's curling shot hit the crossbar - all inside the first six minutes. Millers goalkeeper Andy Warrington then pulled off a fine save to keep out an angled shot from Esajas, but he was helpless moments later when the Owls winger fired home an almost identical effort.

Dithering

The home side's lead lasted 30 seconds. Rotherham captain Pablo Mills split a dithering home defence with his ball into the box and Rhodes pounced to slot home a 14th-minute equaliser. Esajas impressed manager Brian Laws further just before the interval when his raking 30-yard free-kick hit the crossbar. The 23-year-old was thwarted again by Warrington soon after the restart after more neat footwork. Owls midfielder Jimmy Smith, on loan from Chelsea, almost provided another breakthrough, but his effort from 18 yards hit the crossbar and the tie drifted into extra-time. Visiting midfielder Joseph was dismissed for hauling down Clarke with five minutes left and Esajas stepped forward to clip home a fine free-kick. But Rotherham were back on terms straight from the kick-off again. Harrison's shot hit the crossbar and Reid lashed home the rebound with a minute remaining to ensure a penalty shoot-out finish.
