Hungary kept up their push for a place in the Euro 2012 qualifying play-offs with victory in San Marino.

Workmanlike display keeps Egervari's side in contention for play-offs

Hungary kept up their push for a place in the Euro 2012 qualifying play-offs with a workmanlike victory in San Marino. Goals by Zoltan Liptak, Imre Szabics and Vladimir Koman were sufficient for Sandor Egervari's side to maintain the pressure on second-placed Sweden, who nevertheless remain three points better off and with a game in hand after thumping Finland 5-0 in the night's other Group E game. Hungary have the chance to move level on points with the Swedes when the two sides meet in the next round of qualifiers on September 2. The visitors to Serravalle's Stadio Olimpico were in charge from the outset and might have gone ahead in the ninth minute when Krisztian Nemeth saw his effort from the edge of the area crash against the post. San Marino goalkeeper Aldo Simoncini had to be alert in the 23rd minute when he tipped a shot by Tamas Hajnal round the post, while three minutes later Nemeth again threatened as he flashed an effort wide of the left upright.

The visitors eventually hit the front five minutes before the break when Balazs Dzsudzsak's inswinging corner was met by Liptak who tucked the ball home unerringly into the bottom-left corner. Four minutes after the break Hungary were two goals to the good, PSV Eindhoven winger Dzsudzsak again the provider as his cross was headed home by Szabics. Peter Czvitkovics and Dzsudzsak went close to extending Hungary's advantage as the hosts began to tire, and the third goal finally arrived seven minutes from time when Koman took aim from distance and deceived Simoncini with a low effort. Dzsudzsak was very nearly rewarded for a good display with a goal deep into stoppage time, but the busy Simoncini produced a good stop to prevent any further damage.
