Yoshida goes from hero to zero for VVV
Roda JC moved back into the Eredivisie's Europa League play-off places with a 3-1 win over a previously rejuvenated VVV Venlo.
Harm van Veldhoven's Roda had suffered a hat-trick of defeats before hosting a VVV side on Friday night that had strung four wins together to revitalise their hopes of beating the drop.
And while Maya Yoshida gave the in-form visitors a 39th minute lead, his second-half dismissal completed a complete change in fortunes.
Roda had already snatched the lead through Sanharib Malki (51) and Davy De Beule (60) before the Japan defender saw red.
Malki then sealed the win from the penalty spot on 86 minutes as Roda provisionally moved back up to eighth ahead of the weekend's fixtures.
VVV controlled the opening period and Uche Nwofor twice went close early on, his second bicycle-kick effort on 16 minutes nicking the post as it flew wide.
Acrobatic
Roda took until 26 minutes to piece together their first attacking move, with some neat interplay culminating in Mitchell Donald wasting his chance from 12 yards.
VVV deservedly went ahead just before the break when Danny Holla's free-kick smacked against the crossbar and Yoshida was on hand to turn in the rebound.
Away goalkeeper Dennis Gentenaar had to be at his best to retain the lead into the break, though, acrobatically tipping away De Beule's shot.
Roda's comeback did start soon after the break.
A poor clearance from Ismo Vorstermans fell to Malki who smashed an unstoppable shot in from the edge of the area.
Roda were then ahead on the hour when Ruud Vormer was allowed to run from his own half into the penalty area before laying off a pass for De Beule to score from close range.
VVV were now rocking and their frustration showed when Yoshida hit out at Donald, to earn his marching orders, before Vorstermans gave away the late penalty that Malki easily converted.
