City ease relegation fears with vital victory

Chester City eased their relegation fears with a priceless 2-1 win at Notts County to record their first victory since Boxing Day. Dave Mannix headed the visitors in front early on after County midfielder Richard Butcher inadvertently flicked the ball into his path from a corner. And Mark Wright's side wrapped up the points straight after the interval with leading goal scorer Ryan Lowe tapping in from close range. Lowe's 16th of the campaign came after Paul Rutherford intercepted Jamie Clapham's loose back pass, sending it goalwards and leaving Lowe with an empty net. To their credit County staged a fightback, peppering Chester's goal in the second half, eventually finding the target late on but only after keeper Jon Danby was forced off with a shoulder injury, with striker Lowe taking up the gloves. He tipped wide a header from Forte before dropping the next effort from Sean Canham's header into centre-back Mike Edwards' path. He rifled into the roof of the net for a late consolation but despite nine minutes of injury time Chester held out from the Magpies' pressure to end their 18-game winless streak.
