The Desert Foxes take on the Three Lions in Cape Town on Friday night in a crunch Group C clash.
Algeria lost their opening game 1-0 to Slovenia, while England let a lead slip thanks to a howler from Rob Green and could only muster a 1-1 draw against the USA.
Rangers centre-half Bougherra, 27, says the World Cup always throws in a few surprise results and is hoping his side can upset the odds against Fabio Capello's men.
"Every World Cup throws up a sensation or two," he said.
"Switzerland stunning Spain was undoubtedly the first big shock of these finals.
"You could argue that the 1-0 win can provide extra inspiration for us as we face England.
"But no one in the camp needs any convincing that we can stun Fabio Capello's superstars. Because we already believed we can pull off one of the great surprises in World Cup history.
"People back home in Algeria still speak of the 2-1 win over West Germany at the 1982 World Cup - we want to become legends tonight."
A defeat for Algeria would see them crash out of the South Africa tournament, while Slovenia take on the USA in Group C's other tie.
