Marseille victory overshadowed by tragedy

Marseille moved to the top of the early Ligue 1 table thanks to a 1-0 victory over Le Havre, with Boudewijn Zenden scoring the only goal of the game. But the weekend's fixtures were overshadowed by a coach crash which left two Marseille fans dead and four more seriously injured. A minute's silence was held before their match at Le Havre, with chairman Pape Diouf laying flowers on the edge of the pitch. In an understandably subdued fixture, former Liverpool winger Zenden found the net in the 56th minute with an excellent free-kick into the bottom corner. Ronald Zubar received his second yellow card of the game in added time as Marseille were reduced to 10 men late on. Lyon are level on points at the top of the table after they overcame previous leaders Grenoble 2-0 thanks to first-half goals from Jean Makoun and Karim Benzema. Makoun opened the scoring in the sixth minute when he headed home Kim Kallstrom's cross, with Benzema doubling the lead before the break from close range after Juninho's cross. Valenciennes climbed into the upper reaches of the table after an impressive 3-1 victory over Lorient. Gregory Pujol headed Gael Danic's cross home in the third minute with Johan Audal making it 2-0 before the interval from another Danic pass. Kevin Gameiro reduced the deficit early in the second half only for Luigi Pieroni to make sure of the points in the last minute. Thorstein Helstad earned Le Mans a 1-0 victory over St Etienne when he drilled home following good work from Fredrik Stromstad. Jerko Leko's own goal 17 minutes from time earned Caen a point from their trip to Monaco. Frederic Nimani N'galou had headed the Principality side into the lead shortly after the break following Dario Simic's pass, but Leko then put through his own net. Paris St Germain had to come from behind to earn a point in their 1-1 draw with Sochaux as Stephane Sessegnon (63) found the net after Ludovic Giuly's good work. Sochaux went in front from the penalty spot in the 50th minute as Mevlut Erdinc picked himself up after being brought down by Mamadou Sakho to score from 12 yards out. Nancy's clash with Toulouse ended in a goalless draw, with the visitors being reduced to 10 men late in the second half with Issiar Dia being shown a straight red card.
