Curtis Davies would 'love' to play for England, but has suggested his prospects could hinge on the form of Hull City team-mates Tom Huddlestone and Jake Livermore.

The 28-year-old was called up twice by Fabio Capello during his time at Aston Villa and was an unused substitute for England's friendly win over Germany in November 2008.

Davies has made an impressive start to the season with Hull, but concedes his chances of earning a place in current England coach Roy Hodgson's squad are slim.

"I'd love to play for England but it's not something I've really thought about. Especially being in a Hull City shirt, that would be very difficult," Davies is quoted in the Hull Daily Mail.

"My only chance would be if the manager came and watched Tom Huddlestone and Jake Livermore a lot to see what they're doing, and then I might surprise him. I don't think he's going to come down and watch me if I'm honest.

"I say that about Jake and Tom because they've played for this manager. Maybe then I could impress him.

"I'm sure when I did get into the squads under Capello he wasn't there to watch me. I'm sure he was there to watch Ashley Young and Gabby Agbonlahor but I managed to catch his eye.

"If I could do that with this manager then I'd be happy, but I'm not putting all my chips on that one."

However, Tigers boss Steve Bruce has suggested that Davies should take heed of the example of Southampton striker Rickie Lambert, who has forced his way into the England squad late in his career.

Bruce said: "Curtis has started the season and played very well.

"When you look around, there are not that many young centre-halves pushing for a place in the England squad.

"Why shouldn't he be looking in that direction? Look what Rickie Lambert has done, so who knows what might happen? Never say never."
