McLaughlin eyes starting berth

Fleetwood defender Conor McLaughlin hopes to cement a place in Micky Mellon's first team after starting the last three matches.

The 21-year-old made the short move from Preston in the summer but endured a slow start to his Cod Army career, featuring just twice in the first 12 matches of the season. However, injury to team-mate Shaun Beeley has seen the Northern Ireland international become a regular in Mellon's back-line. "I'm enjoying playing regularly again," McLaughlin told Fleetwood's official website. "It was unfortunate for Beels (Shaun Beeley). I have just got to take my chance and I hope I can stay in the team when he comes back. "I had 70 or 80 minutes a couple of weeks before that against Cheltenham and that helped me get back in to the swing of things, hopefully now I can get my sharpness back and even step up in my performances. "I have loved every minute of it since I came. All the lads have been brilliant, welcomed me and it has been an easy transition really."
