Thirlwell: Play-off push tiring

Carlisle club captain Paul Thirlwell feels the club "ran out of gas" in pursuit of a place in the play-offs this season.

The Cumbrians went into the final day with an outside chance of finishing in the top six and although they fell four points short after a 2-1 defeat at Oldham, Thirlwell insists it was a memorable campaign for Greg Abbott's side. "Looking back we maybe just ran out of a bit of gas towards the end of the season," Thirlwell told the club's official website. "But it was a great campaign and one that I think we can be proud of and look to build on over the summer. "I remember after the home game against Huddersfield Town, there was a real buzz around the dressing room. That late winner against a promotion contender left everyone genuinely believing we could do it and finish in the play-off positions, but it just wasn't to be. "Even when you look back now, in those final few games of the season though we weren't getting the results we wanted, we weren't getting battered in any of the matches and it was just a bit of luck going against us."
