Former Derby midfielder desperate to keep impressing Saunders

Doncaster Rovers midfielder Giles Barnes is determined to hold on to his starting spot with the Championship strugglers. Barnes, 23, was restored to Dean Saunders' starting XI at Leeds earlier this month and kept his place against Peterborough last weekend. And he responded by bagging his first goal for the club in the 1-1 draw with Darren Ferguson's men. Now he wants to further impress boss Saunders and earn a prolonged spell in his team. "I'm still not back where I want to be but I do need a clear run in the team to achieve that," Barnes told the Doncaster Star.

"Now I've come back into the team again, but I've got to keep building on my own performances, because I don't want to come out. "The better I play the harder it will be for the manager to leave me out. "It can be hard coming back into the team if you've been on the bench and haven't played. But you just have to try and keep yourself in the right shape." Former West Brom and Derby man Barnes has played different midfield roles under Saunders and insists is more than happy to sit or push further forward. He added: "Wherever the gaffer wants to play me, I'm willing to play that role."
