Smith eyes upcoming fixture

Walsall manager Dean Smith hopes his struggling team can build on the 2-0 win against Wycombe when they face Scunthorpe on Tuesday.

Two goals by Kevan Hurst and George Bowerman in the second half of Saturday's clash at the Banks's Stadium saw the Saddlers leapfrog Wanderers, but both sides remain in the League One relegation zone. Smith said: "Scunthorpe had a good result at Leyton Orient and are a different team to the one we played earlier this season but our next game is always the most important. "I thought we played well and deserved to win and in the second half I felt there was only one team going to win it." But Smith had his heart in his mouth when striker Alex Nicholls missed his second penalty in a week, Wycombe keeper Nikki Bull going down quickly to keep out his low spot-kick in the 49th minute after Dave Winfield bundled over Florent Cuvelier. But he defended Nicholls, adding: "Alex was brave enough to want to take the penalty and he had been practising penalties all day (on Friday). There is no blame apportioned to him."
