We need to strengthen, says McCoist

Rangers manager Ally McCoist admits he needs to strengthen his striking options as it emerged Daniel Cousin could make a return to Ibrox. Cousin's agent, Willie McKay, revealed earlier on Wednesday there had been talks with Rangers over a move for the Gabon international. Cousin, who turned 35 this week, had been playing in the African Cup of Nations in his homeland and is looking for a new club. The striker scored 13 goals in 44 games in his previous stint with Rangers before being sold to Hull in September 2008. McCoist is anxious to do some business soon after losing star hitman Nikica Jelavic to Everton at the end of last month. "We definitely, definitely need to strengthen, if we can, in the forward area," McCoist told the club's official website. "I won't bring anyone in just for the sake of it, that's not going to help anyone. "But there are one or two we have been looking at and, if we get the opportunity to bring them in, then believe me I will."

Free agents

With Jelavic gone and both Kyle Lafferty and Steven Naismith injured, McCoist has been forced to look for free agents with the transfer window now closed. But one solution could be nearer to home with 20-year-old Kane Hemmings set to return from injury shortly. The young English forward played in a UEFA Champions League qualifier in Malmo at the start of the season before a knee operation stalled his progress. McCoist said: "It was disappointing for Kane to get injured when he did because he took part in most of the pre-season games and training before he picked it up. "He's still got a long, long way to go and he's still potential but he's a great lad and one that we have high hopes for so it would be great to have him back. "He's very positive and is a good striker of the ball with both feet. He's quick and he's very direct. "I certainly don't want to put any pressure on him, but he's certainly someone that, when we look to the future, we think he'll be a really big player for the club."
