Lastuvka out to impress

Keeper preparing for second spell in the Premier League

Jan Lastuvka is set to undergo a medical at West Ham ahead of his proposed move to Upton Park. The Czech keeper is closing in on a move to the Hammers, and is hoping that his second taste of life in England is more successful than his first. The 26-year-old was loaned to Fulham in the summer of 2006, but saw first-team opportunities hard to come by as he played back-up to Antti Niemi. He is determined to avoid a repeat of that situation this time around and is confident that he has the attributes to challenge Robert Green for the No. 1 jersey. "I mainly need to adapt quickly and convince the club that they have not made a mistake in signing me," he told Denik Sport. "I want it to be useful for me and avoid a similar case to my loan at Fulham. "I would like to play at least as regularly as I have done at Bochum in the last six months. But I realise a goalkeeper must show their quality all the time."

Valuation

If Lastuvka impresses Alan Curbishley next season then his year-long loan deal could be made into a permanent switch. The chances of that happening have been helped by the fact his parent club, Shakhtar Donetsk, are prepared to lower their 4-5million euros (around £3.5m) asking price. "Donetsk are demanding a reasonable amount," said the keeper. Lastuvka is also relishing the prospect of working with his countryman Ludek Miklosko at Upton Park, as the former Czech international is the Hammers' goalkeeping coach. "It is good that Mr Miklosko will be able to help me from the beginning," he said. "But it is also clear to me that, as his compatriot, I will be under more pressure. "However, I believe I will not disappoint anyone."
