Liverpool's defence of the League Cup came to an end as Brendan Rodgers suffered an unhappy reunion with Swansea City in a 3-1 fourth round defeat at Anfield.
Rodgers will be devastated by the defeat but Swansea deserved the win and their place in the last eight of the competition after a fine demonstration of counter-attacking. Liverpool had been unbeaten in their last nine League Cup matches, although the first of those was another Anfield night to forget when Roy Hodgson's side were eliminated on penalties against Northampton. But Swansea always looked the more dangerous when going forward, with Michu having another superb performance when holding up the ball as the main man at the front of Laudrup's attack. It was in defence where Liverpool looked the most vulnerable as Jamie Carragher delivered another display which suggests he will be retiring at the end of the season and Sebastian Coates looked a little shaky. And so Rodgers will be demanding significant improvements when he welcomes back first-team regulars for Sunday's difficult home meeting with Newcastle United in the Premier League.Liverpool | Team | Swansea City |
