Schmeichel helps Cardiff claim goalless draw

Leicester's first home game under Ian Holloway ended in frustration as they were held to a goalless draw by Cardiff. The biggest crowd of the season gathered at The Walkers Stadium to see if The Foxes could follow up their 2-0 victory over Bristol City with three more points, but Cardiff produced a battling performance to deny them. While Holloway has been enjoying a honeymoon period as new Leicester manager, his opposite number in the Cardiff dugout has had to endure speculation about his future. But Dave Jones will have been happy with Cardiff's display in an entertaining first half that saw both sides go close to breaking the deadlock. Matt Fryatt's early penalty shout for a foul by Glenn Loovens fell on deaf ears, while at the other end Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's powerful free-kick swerved just wide of the post.

Schmeichel save

The best chance of the opening 45 minutes fell to Richard Stearman, but Kasper Schmeichel brought back memories of his father with a sprawling save from close range. Peter Whittingham came on for Cardiff at the start of the second half and it took just a few moments for him to make a mark on the game, curling an excellent shot onto the crossbar from distance. Steve Thompson could only force Marton Fulop into a routine save when he was given a glimpse of goal after 67 minutes, but for the most part Leicester, who have the best defensive record in the Championship, contained Cardiff expertly. Leicester piled forward in pursuit of a winner in the closing stages, but Iain Hume's volley hit the post and ricocheted off Schmeichel's back for a corner, and Chris Gunter cleared Fryatt's header off the goalline. Schmeichel made another fine save to keep Leicester at bay three minutes from time as Cardiff clung on for the draw.
