Hosts win easily as Fenerbahce put in a poor display

Dynamo Kiev progressed to the Uefa Cup at the expense of Fenerbahce with a deserved 1-0 victory over their rivals on a difficult playing surface in the Ukraine. The home side needed just a point to finish third in UEFA Champions League Group G but claimed all three thanks to Roman Eremenko's 20th minute winner. The Ukrainians started the better with Florin Cernat's free-kick in the second minute from 30 yards hitting the wall, while Ismael Bangoura's long-range effort a minute later was wide of Fenerbahce's left post. The visitors came more into the game and Alex almost threaded a ball through to Daniel Guiza on 15 minutes but keeper Stanislav Bogush was out quickly to gather. Three minutes later, Guiza was given offside as he tried to get onto another Alex through-ball.

      Volkan mistake

Kiev then went in front in the 20th minute after a mistake by Fenerbahce keeper Volkan Demirel. The goal came after Artem Milevskiy played an exquisite cross from the right to Eremenko on the left edge of the box, with Volkan coming out to try and deny him and making it easy for the midfielder to slot home between his legs. Five minutes later Milevskiy's powerful shot inside the box was deflected wide by Roberto Carlos before Kiev won two corners but could not capitalise. Selcuk Sahin's long-range effort on 30 minutes at the other end was easily gathered by Bogush, before Gokhan Gonul won a corner on the right for Fenerbahce three minutes later but Pape Diakhate headed firmly out at the near post. The visitors' best chance arrived on 37 minutes when Guiza played the ball out to Gokhan on the right and then received the ball back unmarked in the box but he could only head straight at Bogush. Gokhan then made a good dribble into the right side of the box on the stroke of half-time but his effort went well wide of the near post.
      Second-half
In the second period, Bangoura shot over when well positioned outside the area on 49 minutes, while 10 minutes later substitute Artem Kravets also shot over from a tight angle for the hosts. Milevskiy won a free-kick 25 yards out on the left of the box on 63 minutes but Tiberiu Ghioane hit the free-kick straight at the keeper, while Deivid shot tamely over the bar from outside the box at the other end soon afterwards. On 72 minutes the hosts stretched Fenerbache but Kravets' cross from the right was too deep and went harmlessly out. Two minutes later Carlos sent a free-kick from 30 yards on the left into the wall, while Ognjen Vukojevi then forced Volkan into a diving save with an effort outside the box on 82 minutes. Four minutes later Kravets sprung the offside trap but his effort was weak and easily cleared. Deep into injury-time substitute Claudio Maldonado was then sent-off to cap a miserable night for the visitors.
