Cheltenham eased into the second round of the JPT as goals from Jimmy Spencer and Jeff Goulding sank Torquay 2-1.
The Robins could have bagged a few more had it not been for rookie keeper Martin Rice, making his first start for the visitors. After an early scare when home keeper Scott Brown had to make a smart double save from Chris McPhee and Billy Bodin, Cheltenham began to take control. Spencer turned home the opener on 14 minutes following Kaid Mohamed's cross before Rice saved well from Mohamed and then pulled off a brilliant save to palm away a fierce Brian Smikle effort. Brown was also called on late in the half, producing a point-blank stop to deny Bodin before the Robins notched their second, Goulding volleying home after some sloppy defending. Torquay reduced the arrears on the hour, Lloyd Macklin stabbing home a Bodin cross, but solid defending kept the Cheltenham lead in tact.
