Djalo scores the only goal to cap miserable group phase for Basel

Sporting Lisbon celebrated a first qualification for the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League with a 1-0 win at Basel. Yannick Djalo claimed the only goal of the game in the first half against a Basel side which mustered just one point from six games in Group C. Paulo Bento's men broke clear early on through Derlei, but he dragged his shot across the face of goal and, at the opposite end, Basel midfielder Ivan Ergic shot over from 25 yards. The visitors should have taken the lead on 15 minutes when a brilliant pass sent Djalo down the right and his cross picked out the unmarked Derlei in front of goal, but his header was too close to Basel keeper Franco Costanzo. The reprieve for Basel was momentary, though, as Sporting grabbed the lead four minutes later when Marat Izmailov fired in a superb, low cross and Djalo nipped between two defenders to slide in from close range.

      Injury blow

Djalo also fired into the side-netting before Sporting were forced into a change before half-time as Simon Vukcevic was stretchered off to be replaced by Abel. Both teams made substitutions at the break, with Basel looking the livelier after Valentin Stocker replaced Scott Chipperfield. But though Basel were brighter, the Swiss side still struggled to create chances as Benjamin Huggel's ball back across goal almost deflected in off Marco Caneira. Fabian Frei's well-struck shot from 25 yards was comfortably saved by Tiago before Djalo kept Costanzo honest at the other end. Basel had opportunities to snatch an equaliser late on as substitute Stocker's shot was smartly turned away low down by Tiago. And in the final minutes Carlitos had two chances fall his way, his first was saved by Tiago and he then headed wide when well placed.
