Brest earn promotion to top flight after win

Marseille edged closer to the Ligue 1 title after a 0-0 draw at nearest rivals Auxerre allowed them to preserve their five-point lead with three matches left to play. The result meant that Marseille could capture a ninth title and first since 1992 on Wednesday when Auxerre face Lyon before Marseille tackle Rennes at Stade Velodrome. A goalless draw on Friday was hardly a surprise as the top-of-table clash featured the league's two meanest defences. While Auxerre relied on the counter-attack, Marseille were left to create the best chances with Lucho, Mamadou Niang and Brandao all going close. For the home side, Benoit Pedretti and Ireneusz Jelen almost broke the deadlock. Meanwhile, Brest were promoted to Ligue 1 following a 2-0 home win against Tours on Friday. The Brittany side now have 64 points and are in second place in Ligue 2, enjoying a 13-point unassailable lead over fourth-placed Clermont with three games left. Brest joined Caen as the second promoted team from Ligue 2, with Arles-Avignon poised to snatch the remaining spot.
