Mariners sink Stanley

Relegation-threatened Grimsby came from two goals behind to record an unlikely 3-2 win at Accrington.

Second-half comeback downs Accrington

Grimsby came from two goals behind to record an unlikely 3-2 win at Accrington and claim a vital three points in their relegation fight. It looked like the Mariners were out of it after the second-from-bottom side wasted a number of chances in the first half through Tommy Wright, Jean Louis Akpa Akpro and Oliver Lancashire. And, against the run of play, Stanley took advantage, scoring two goals in six minutes as they looked to halt a dismal run of four successive defeats. First Billy Kee headed home from Chris Turner's cross in the 38th minute from six yards out. And then striker Kee set up Michael Symes, back after a three-game ban, and he curled home his 18th goal of the season one minute before half-time. But then came a stunning quick-fire revival. Grimsby got a goal their pressure deserved in the 56th minute when Mark Hudson twisted in the area to head home a Michael Coulson right-wing cross. And three minutes later Coulson's 22-yard free kick took a slight deflection off the wall to beat goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis and level the scores. Number three soon followed when winger Jamie Devitt was allowed to run into the area and fired low past the shell-shocked Stanley keeper on 61 minutes. Grimsby could have had more with a Devitt goalbound effort taking a deflection in only their third away win of the season.
